J Rizal Lodge, Havana, Cuba: Bro Amb Corsino

PHILIPPINE EMBASSY
HAVANA, CUBA

23 October 2008

Worshipful Master Francisco Liu
Mt. Kaladias Lodge #91
Dumaguete City

Dear Worshipful Sir,

I would like to inform you and the brethren of Mt. Kaladias Lodge #91 that today I had a meeting with WM Juan Pablo Moret and PWM Pedro Francisco Ugarte of the Jose Rizal Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons in Havana, Cuba. (I heard that there was a Jose Rizal Masonic Lodge in Havana shortly after I arrived here, and so, asked my secretary to contact them.)

They were very happy to know that I, the Philippine Ambassador, am a Mason belonging, Bro to a mother lodge under the Grand Lodge of the Philippines. For my part, I was very pleased to find out that their Lodge, founded in 1956, was named after our national hero--a recognition not only of Rizal's greatness but also of his having been a Mason. In fact, they showed me a lodge bulletin which bore Rizal's picture, his brief biography, and his sayings and a full-length poem, "A La Juventud Filipina".

I was also surprised to hear that they have around 400 masonic lodges in Cuba with a membership of almost 40,000, under the Grand Lodge of Cuba. I was told that they would convey to the Grand Master that the Philippine Ambassador is a Mason. Through you, worshipful, perhaps we could also inform the Grand Master of Philippine Masons that the Craft is active in Cuba under their Grand Lodge and there is a Jose Rizal Lodge in Havana. (The lodges here do not have numbers, unlike in RP.)

They have invited me to attend any of their next meetings. I was happy to welcome their invitation. Although everything will be in Spanish, I will endeavor to follow the ritual as conventionally known all over the world and they will also provide me with an interpreter as I would most probably be requested to say a few words to the Cuban brethren.

Please inform our Bro. Hector Villanueva of this development. I have long wanted to communicate with him, but phone communication is almost impossible. May I therefore ask you to provide me with his email address.

Also, please disseminate this information to our Mt. Kaladias brethren.

Sincerely and Fraternally, your Bro,

Ambassador Mac Corsino

Bro Paulino D. Gaspar Drops Working Tools: 3 Nov 2008

Let us say a silent prayer for the eternal repose of our brother:

"The power and action of prayer for the souls of the departed is even greater than prayer for the living. There is no greater comfort than prayer and no greater joy than joy in the Lord for those who are separated from their bodies. It is unjust, as some think, to assume that the needs of our departed brethren are unknown to us. However, this is not true. The spiritual needs of the dead are the same as the spiritual needs of the living. The dead need the mercy and goodness of the Heavenly Father, forgiveness and remission of sins, grace-filled help from God in the fulfillment of all good desires, and the peace and ease of the heart and conscience. These things are most important both for the living and the dead. Give rest, O Lord, to the souls of Thy departed servants is the continual prayer... "

Worshipful Sirs and Brethren,

Just for your information, the Filipino American Military Offices Association (FAMOS) will be represented on Nov 3 for Bro Emil Robles.

Most, including retired members will show up in military uniforms to pay him final respects, Emil being an active FAMOS member. Some are not Masons, but will be there as Bro Emil's shipmates. I also expect to see substantial representation from the Lions Club as Bro Emil is also an active Lion.

Philippine Heritage House at Balboa Park (Photo courtsey of Bro Caloy Buzon)

I met Emil in the early 80's when he was a USN Master Chief. On and off, we managed to stay in touch through the years. He was commissioned and retired as CWO4. A civic leader, he remained active in the Filipino community, supporting many Filipino events, especially the Philippine Heritage House in Balboa Park. Although soft spoken, his presence will always be felt.

A man of few words, Bro Emil always spoke with substance and was a proud Mason. He has been stricken with illness in the last several years, losing much of the Schwarzenegger built he always had. However, when I saw him last month, he looked the usual health I knew of him; well built, muscular and full of energy. That's why I was stunned to hear that he dropped his working tools to continue his afterlife journey.

Attached is a photo with Bro Emil, and the Philippine House in Balboa Park, San Diego.

Let's offer our prayers for his travel to join The GAOTU, and for the strength
of those he left behind.

International Order of Job's Daughters (IOJD)

"The International Order of Job's Daughters is the ONLY international organization for young women between the ages of 10 and 20 that requires *ALL OF ITS MEMBERS to have a relationship to a Master Mason*, and while it is not part of the Masonic Fraternity, this pre-requisite ties it closely to the Masonic Order.

Job's Daughters International offers the qualities that today's young women want and need from organizations that earn their commitment . . . fun, friendship, helping others, and the chance to learn organizational and leadership skills.

Most importantly, Job's Daughters teaches members about friendship and respect for other people and cultures. Job's Daughters has over 20,000 members in Canada, Australia, the Philippines, Brazil and the United States. As a member, your daughter will have the opportunity to travel and meet girls from other lands.

Job's Daughters has a rich heritage and tradition. Founded by Mrs. Ethel T. Wead Mick, or Mother Mick, as the members affectionately call her, in 1920 to provide an opportunity for young women to work together, to learn about themselves and to help others.

The group takes its name from the Book of Job, and in particular to a reference in the 42nd Chapter that says, "*And in all the land were no women found so fair as the Daughters of Job*."

In general, the Book of Job teaches us a Masonic optimistic lesson - Not to fall in despair; it shows that Masonic ideas are imperishable. We see this exemplified in Job's life. Special emphasis is given to the thoughts that "To Be Fair Is to Do Good" and "Virtue Is a Quality Which Highly Adorns Woman."

Working closely together, daughters will make new friends that will last a lifetime. Throughout the year, they undertake service projects to help our community, the less fortunate, and other charities. They learn leadership. By holding various offices in Job's Daughters, daughters will gain valuable leadership experience, be a part of a team, and learn democratic principles.

Education is very important in Job's Daughters. None of our activities should interfere with schoolwork or home responsibilities. Meetings follow a long tradition of order. The Officers wear traditional Grecian robes, symbols of democracy and equality, provided by the Bethel. Other members wear dresses to meetings. Meetings are held twice a month.

Job's Daughters is a self-governing group. Each Bethel elects an Honored Queen and the Officers to lead them for a six-month term. The Queen and Officers help to run the group and take care of business such as keeping track of finances, planning events like fund raising, social and fun activities, all with the guidance of adult volunteers and master masons.

To become a Job's Daughter does not involve an embarrassing ritual or test of courage. Initiations are solemn, meaningful ceremonies presented by Bethel Officers. Parents are welcome at initiations and all of the meetings. For more information on how your daughter can benefit from this excellent organization or how you can create or sponsor a Job's Daughters organization in your lodges, districts, or temples, please get in touch with :

*Sister Nina Aragon, incumbent Grand Guardian* Grand Guardian Council Philippines

*Sister Melcie Gatcho, Bethel Guardian* *Bethel** 22 Manila* Plaridel Masonic Temple 1440 San Marcelino St., City of Manila.

(Moderator's note: Mobile numbers ommitted for private reasons. Please contact the above sisters in writing or in person at the Plaridel Masonic Temple.)

To be a member of Job's Daughters is to be part of a group that promotes friendship among young women and confidence in themselves. As a member, daughters will learn skills that will help you throughout your life. Your daughter will become part of an organization that serves the community. Most importantly, you will have fun."

Hagonoy Lodge # 369 Visitation & Fellowship by Bro Pablo C. Duldulao

The venue.

"The wonderful thing about Masonry is it is like a scotch whiskey. As it is aged in an oak barrel into a vintage Blue Label Scotch bourbon, its mellow touch as you take it down so smoothly , allures you to take another gulp again and again.

Yesterday 9 October 2008, we visited Hagonoy Lodge # 369 and attended their October Stated Meeting under the stewardship of Worshipful Master Bro Edwardo Alfonso.

It was during the fellowship hours amidst the just plain face to face talked with the brethren and shoulder to shoulder sway with the "soul" music of Brother Secretary Pedy de la Cruz (Hagonoy Lodge), WB Rene Driz (Matt Monro of Ang Tipolo Lodge), SW Steve Nieves (Frank Sinatra of Mandaluyong Lodge), the sweet voices of WM Roger Panganiban and SW Arnel Querubin (Ang Tipolo Lodge) that created an ecstatic air of brotherhood, a closer bond among the brethren.

The presence of VW Bro Greg "Boy" Alvarez, Past Master; who was my mentor during my initiation days at TM Kalaw Lodge #136, tends me to go back and reminisce that memorable portion of my early experiences with the craft. Kuyang Mario Alvarez is a seasoned diplomat and entertainer.

The visiting brethren are as follows:

WB Rico Castor, PM, King Solomon Lodge #150, charter member, Ang Tipolo Lodge #334
WB Rene Driz, PM, Ang Tipolo Lodge #334
WB Gustav Bocek, PM, Ang Tipolo Lodge #334
WM Roger Panganiban, Ang Tipolo Lodge #334

90th Lodge Anniversary of Pampanga Masonic Lodge No. 48

"On behalf of our Worshipful Master, WBro Joey Lacson, the brethren of Pampanga Masonic Lodge No. 48 would like to extend our acknowledgement for the greetings and well-wishes that we received on our Lodge's 90th Birthday this July.

Our 90th Charter Anniversary will be on the 28th of January 2009.

Our Anniversary Theme is: 90 YEARS of HARMONY - A Foundation Towards A Stronger Society (Pamikakapatad. Pamisaupan. Katutuan.)

Brief history of our Lodge:

Our Lodge was founded in 1918, when fifteen (15) Capampangan Masons from eight (8) different lodges gathered in the old residence of the Abad Santos's here in the City of San Fernando, Pampanga for Masonic information and education. It was during one these meetings that the idea of forming a Lodge of their own was conceived. They prepared a request to the Grand Lodge for the issuance of a dispensation that would authorize them to form a lodge that will be named Pampanga Lodge. The petition for a Provisional Charter was drafted and ratified and was signed by these band of brothers.

In July 16, of the same year, the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of the Philippine Islands granted the requested dispensation. The 15 signatories became our Lodge's Charter Members.

The Founding Fathers of Pampanga Lodge were Brothers Pedro Abad Santos, Saturnino Ocampo, Lucas G. Baviera, Isidro Makabali, Pablo Angeles David, Felix B. Bautista, Regino R. Gamboa, Ceferino Hilario, Pedro Malig, Marcelino Bustos Zabala, Isabelo de Silva, Benito Golding, Pacifico R. Panlilio, Bernardo Samson, and Mariano Tiglao.

MW Manuel L. Quezon - the Grand Master then, appointed from this roster of visionaries the First Three Lights for our Mother Lodge. Brother Pedro Abad Santos became the Worshipful Master in the East and Brothers Isabelo de Silva and Ceferino Hilario assumed the position of the Senior and Junior Wardens, respectively.

By the strength of the dispensation, the Members of our Lodge were authorized not only to accept petitions, but also to screen and elect petitioners. Five months later, during the period of dispensation, our Lodge conducted its First Raising Ceremony.

On December 28, 1918, the following candidates became Master Masons: Saturnino David, Pascual Gozun, Candido Hizon, Marciano Ordoñez, and Amado Pekson. To these five brethren, belong the honorable distinction of being the first members to be raised to the Sublime Degree of Masonry in Pampanga Lodge.

The Lodge received its Charter on January 28, 1919, during the Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of the Philippine Islands, which was signed by the new Grand Master, MW Bro Milton E. Springer and the Grand Secretary MW Bro Newton C. Comfort. The authorized name became Pampanga Masonic Lodge No. 48.

Two months later, on March 29, 1919, Grand Master Milton E. Springer, assisted by Francisco A. Delgado, Ladislao Jose, Miguel Unson and other Masonic dignitaries, constituted the Lodge and installed its officers at the Cine Exelsior in San Fernando, Pampanga before an audience of more than 1,000.

Juan L. Luna, the orator of the Lodge, delivered an address of welcome in Spanish.

Pascual Gozun spoke in Pampango on the Mission of Masonry - Pamikakapatad (Brotherly Love), Pamisaupan (Relief) at Katutuan (Truth)."

"Congratulations to the Brethren at Lodge Pampanga #48 on reaching their 90th birthday.

I'm sure the forefathers of this Lodge would be proud to know that their vision 90 years ago is today, a strong reality.

Organizing the New "Brothers of Harmony" Masonic Choir

"Brethren All!

The Most Worshipful Grand Master Brother Boy Aniag, has made the first move towards the realization of a masonic choir in this local jurisdiction. Illustrious Brother Juanito Abergas, Grand Secretary General of the Supreme Council is joining the MW Grand Master in this move.

Actually there are several lodge choirs around the country, but one from the districts in the NCR would truly be a very historic and promising one. If you will recall in 1963 the Luzon Bodies, A. & A.S.R. organized the Brothers of Harmony which has reached a stature where it was considered one of the best, if not the best, male choir in the country. Time was not so kind that after around 20 years it died a natural death.

This time, the undersigned brother has been commissioned to try to organize one, not from one Bodies or Lodge, but from our rich pool of singing brethren in the Metro Manila area. We are therefore inviting you brethren, not necessarily music professionals or Pavarottis, but who could simply carry tunes, to join our music for fellowship, by responding to this call. This will be a weekly rehearsal session.

Please give your names, you lodge affiliation, your cell number and/or email address, your voice section (if you know) and send it right away to me through our GLP yahoo groups. Once we have received enough number of members, we will call an initial meeting which our MW Grand Master has graciously offered to host.

Please pass this invitation to the other brethren who may be interested. The more brethren, the better."

Brother Jose "Joe" Abejo, PM
Dapitan Lodge #21

----------------------------------

First Meeting

Brethren,

"The first meeting, and organizational gathering of the New Brothers of Harmony is set for Monday, August 11 at 4PM at the Heroes Hall of the Scottish Rite Temple, Taft Avenue.

After our organizational meeting, MW Boy Aniag will host a merienda-cena/dinner at the Dreemhause, right beside the Scottish Rite.

Please let this be known to other singing brethren who may be interested to join
this new Masonic Choir."

"No longer mourn for me when I am dead
Than you shall hear the surly sullen bell
Give warning to the world that I am fled
From this vile world, with vilest worms to dwell:

Nay if you read this line, remember not
The hand that writ it, for I love you so
That in your sweet thoughts would be forgot,
If thinking on me then should make you woe."

San Diego Fair Masonic Booth Report

"Brethren,

Finally the San Diego Fair is over. The Masonic Booth was taken down last Monday. I must admit it was expensive (gas, food was a rip off…etc) and tiring for us old folks but it was all well worth it.

I don’t have the exact stats but we did much better than last year. We gave out more Child ID’s this year, we also had more lead cards signed. For your information we were able to raise 10 Master Masons from these lead cards last year. If any of the San Diego Lodges need the ID system just give me a call or shoot me an email.

My apologies to the brethren of Southwest Lodge for the mis-communication… Opsiee... I also forgot my cell last July 4th at home (another of my mature moments).

I already locked and loaded Southwest Lodge on the last Saturday for next year's fair. My hats off to the brethren of SW Lodge and WBro Bob Astudillo for launching the Kimball DeMolay Chapter. Please support their breakfast fundraising on July 27 from 8am-1pm. Let’s start our sons, nephews etc on the right path make them join the DeMolays.

Fraternally,

Bro Joel Narciso, Coordinator
San Diego Fair Masonic Booth"

Some of the brethren taking a breather at the SD Fair Masonic Child ID Booth.

On behalf of the Child Id Committee of the Grand Lodge of California, I would like to acknowledge and appreciate the presence of the following at the Masonic Child ID Booth during the San Diego Fair:

WM Fil Garcia: Sitting Master, Black Mountain Lodge #845

WM Rudy Alquero: Past Master, Black Mountain Lodge #845

Bro Bernie Gapus: Black Mountain Lodge #845

Bro Ben Cueto: Black Mountain Lodge #845

Bro Artzell Bautista: Southwest Lodge #283

Mr Sherwin Viscocho: candidate, Black Mountain Lodge #845

Mr Arnel Zapata: candidate, Black Mountain Lodge #845

Mr Alex Farfan, volunteer

Bro Joel and son, JT at the booth working on "Father's Day".

And my son JT (10 yrs old) who enjoys every Masonic endeavour that we perform. I can bet my Masonic wages that he has attended more Masonic functions... :^). He once asked me how to be a Worshipful, “you must have the Masonic hearth, humility and hard work” (which sorry to say I don’t have) . Who knows we might have the first Filipino GM of California in the making.

Kimball DeMolay Chapter
Brethren,
I would like to thank WBro Bob Astudillo, his Lady and the Brethren of Southwest Lodge No 283 for stepping up to revive the Demolay Chapter in National City.
WBro Bob is one of the few Past Masters who after having served his Lodge, continuously makes every effort to find ways to enrich Masonic traditions. We Masons owe him a great deal of gratitude, because his efforts positively reflects on ALL of us “Masons”.
I suspect one of his secrets is his better half, who’s been always there to support him (sarap naman). Worshi! More power! I wish we have more PM’s like you, you have my 110% support!"
Fraternally,
Bro Joel Narciso, NHL #632
